Domestic Engineering is Hard Work!

Okay, not really. But it certainly is time-consuming. I spent the majority of yesterday doing around-the-house kinds of things: cooking, baking, laundry, straightening up. And I even had my mother’s help. I don’t know how people do all of that and then have kids on top of it! Regardless, I had a pleasantly surprising fun time doing said things. And I enjoy quality time with my mother, too.

We were initially going to go to the beach but decided it was too hot and opted for an early brunch (more like breakfast) and a day spend indoors. We were in and out of The Royal Tavern in less than an hour before making our way over to Ikea and Target to scope out storage containers for some of the crap in my basement. But back to brunch—Royal has a great brunch menu! And while everything looked rather tasty, I ended up ordering Breakfast #5 (two eggs, toast, bacon and home fries). The portion was just the right size so I didn’t leave feeling overly stuffed, nor did I leave half my plate full. Awesome. I like normal-sized portions!

So on to shopping . . . Ikea is Ikea but Target is the devil! I swear, that place can really make a person blow their whole paycheck! I did not, fortunately, but I did end up with a new shower curtain and a new dress, both of which I did not originally set out to buy. (But a cute dress for $19.99—who can resist?!) I can’t find a picture of the dress on the Target website so I guess I can’t post it. Ah, well. Target love anyway . . . ahhhhh.

I spent the rest of the ungodly hot day in my nice, cool, air-conditioned house. Except, wait . . . I was baking. Forget what I said about the nice, cool, air-conditioned house. My tiny kitchen gets pretty toasty when the oven is in use. Yesterday was no exception. Did I care? Not really. Why? Because look at these beautiful cupcakes:

I guess you could say it was my first fancy cupcake. Now I’m hooked. I want to make a fancy cupcake every weekend. Since I used the fresh thyme from my patio garden, I don’t see why I shouldn’t find a recipe calling for some kind of basil cupcake. Or peppermint. Or cilantro. Oh wait, our cilantro plant isn’t doing so well these days. Hmmm . . . but yes, fancy cupcakes are The Shit. Derek even went so far as to say the PB&T cupcake tasted better than a Brown Betty cupcake. Whoa! Their cupcakes are AWESOME. Anyway, hooray for me!

Oh yeah, remember that carrot soup I made on Saturday morning? Yeah well, it was just as tasty as I thought it would be. I topped it off with homemade croutons and served a side of roasted potatoes, too. Super delicious dinner, my friends. Super.

Man, my skills are greatly improving. I want to host a dinner party just so I can cook for people besides just D and myself.

Ugh, it’s only 11:23 and I’m already hungry for lunch. I need to cut this short before my stomach starts really grumbling.
